Learn how to make this decorative candle holder using a recycled jar, designed by Ellen Allan.
Materials and Tools:
mayonnaise jar
glass etching cream
craft brush
Masquepen with Supernib
seed beeds
3-5 fancy big beads
Krylon stained glass spray paint
votive candle
1-1/2 yard 28-gauge nontarnish silver wire

Steps:
1. Clean and dry empty mayonnaise jar.
2. Use the Supernib attachment on the Masquepen to make a design all over the jar. Little squiggles can be nice, as well as shapes like stars and hearts. You can also write sayings or words.

3. Apply a thick layer of etching cream. Wait five minutes and then wash off.

4. Take jar outside and spray the inside lightly with a few coats of the stained glass paint. When working with spray paint, be sure to work outdoors or in a well ventilated area.

5. String 36 inches of seed beads on to the wire. Wrap the beaded wire around the top of the jar in between the grooves where the lid would go.

6. Wrap the ends of the wires together and finish by putting big beads on the ends. Place candle inside jar.

You’ll always be able to improvise a centerpiece with these candle blocks: Each face is drilled with a hole sized to fit a particular type of candle.
Candle Blocks How-To
1. Start with a single 4-by-4-inch cedar post from a lumberyard or home center; cut it into 4-inch cubes. With an electric drill, make holes in the center of each side. Use a drill guide to bore a perpendicular hole, which will enable candles to stand straight and burn evenly. Bit sizes shown are gauged to standard candle thicknesses. Top to bottom: 7/8-inch bit for a hand-dipped taper; 9/32-inch for a stick taper; 1 1/8- to 1 1/2-inch Forstner bit for tealights and large tapers (sizes vary slightly); 3/4-inch spade bit for a Shabbat candle; 15/32-inch bit for a Christmas-tree candle.
